Baristas are bringing a taste of the continent to Newcastle this Christmas with pop-up Belgian beer bar, The Lanterne Rouge.

On Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays in the run up to the festive season, the new Flat Caps coffee shop in Carliol Square, will be transformed into a Brussels style sit down boozer, with draught and bottled beers and low country inspired bar snacks.

The bar’s beer selection includes Belgian classics from Chimay, Duvel, Boon and Rochefort, modern Belgian brews from Fantome, British brewed Belgian style beer from Aberdeen’s Six Degrees North and Manchester’s Cloudwater, and Belgian inspired brews from Denmark’s Mikkeller.

Flat Caps staff are also on hand to provide hot drinks, including traditional hot spiced cherry beer Gluhkriek.

Food comes in the form of “Belgian tapas” including Kopvlees – a pigs head terrine from the award winning Feathers Inn in Northumberland – Boudin (blood sausage) and gouda with celery salt.

The Lanterne Rouge opens Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 6pm to 11pm, and Sundays 1pm to 7pm, until Christmas Eve.
