Newcastle University’s own brewery – “run by students, for students” – was announced in  August 2013.

Funded through the National Union of Students (NUS) Student Green Fund, students are set to grow their own hops, learn the finer art of beer-making, bottling, marketing and selling the final tipple to their fellow students through their Students’ Union bar.

Speaking at it’s launch  NUSU community action project manager Bob Milan said it is hoped to have the brewery’s first samples ready for tasting early in 2014.

“We already have the polytunnels in place at our community allotment and also at our main site in Rupert’s Wood, Northumberland ready for growing the hops and we’ve rented a disused barn which will be converted into the new brewery,” he said.

The University also founded a brewing society to run alongside the brewery and teach students entrepreneurial skills.
