Durham Brewery boss thanks drinkers for 20 years of support
Durham Brewery founder Steve Gibbs has thanked North East drinkers for supporting his business through its first 20 years.
The Bowburn based firm marked two decades of beer-making with a party at the brewery on August 2, where Steve was presented with a special award by Durham Camra.
And it was such a success, daughter Elly Bell says the brewery will do it all over again next year for its 21st anniversary.
“I’d like to say a thank you for supporting us, as if it wasn’t for you we wouldn’t be anywhere,” said former teacher Steve, who founded Durham Brewery in 1994 with wife Christine.
To mark two decades of North East brewing, County Durham’s now oldest brewery launched a new 10.2% ABV “suped-up” version of it’s White Stout – with added pink peppercorns – called 1994, which was available on draught alongside more traditional favourites like Magus and Evensong.
“It was a very successful day, with a fantastic crowd and an eclectic mix of people,” said Elly, Durham Brewery’s sales and marketing manager.
“The Mango Hefeweizen and White Velvet sold the fastest but the star of the show was the 1994 Anniversary Ale with brilliant labels by Andy Mogg at Lemon Top Creative.
“A big thanks to Mick at the Free Trade Inn for bringing a bus load of his regulars.
“Also thank you to Nick from Durham Camra for supplying, setting up and manning the extra bar.
“It went so well we think we’ll do one every year, on the first Saturday in August.”
