Mordue brews up Oatmeal Stout for Weatherspoon’s latest beer festival

Mordue Oatmeal Stout pump clipA TYNESIDE brewery is again featuring in JD Wetherspoon’s real ale festival – and has created a new beer for the 800 pub national event.

With Panda Frog’s Operation Red Thunder already its October special, Mordue Brewery wanted something different.

“We were asked to produce a new beer for the October beer festival by David, the managing director of EastWest Ales, who supply all of the JD Wetherspoon chain,” said brewery managing director Garry Fawson.

“He was after a dark beer and as he trusts us, so he left it up to us as to what it would be like.”

“Rob (Millichamp, head brewer) wanted to brew an Oatmeal Stout and Matt and I are big fans of this style,” said Garry, who runs Mordue with his brother, Matt.

“We left Rob to weave his magic and he has made an absolute corker of a beer.”

Their new 4.5% black, oatmeal stout has chocolate and roasted grain aromas, a dark chocolate and biscuit flavour and a coffee aftertaste, backed up with spicy Northern Brewer, Progress & Willamette hops.

Initially the beer will be available nationally in JD Wetherspoon pubs, but any extra will be sold to Mordue’s local customers on a first come first served basis. It will also be available in limited bottle and keg versions.
