Operation Red Thunder aims to conquer drinkers hearts for Panda Frog

Operation Red Thunder logoTyneside brewers are hoping to conquer the hearts – and tastebuds – of drinkers with a new military themed brew.

North Shields-based Mordue Brewery’s “experimental” brand Panda Frog’s seventh brew – following beers like the well received Pandazilla – is and American red ale, Operation Red Thunder.

“Head brewer Rob (Millichamp) wanted to brew a big American red ale, with lots and lots of new world hops,” said managing director Garry Fawson.

“And we want to show people how we can push the boundaries of beer making and try to make something outstanding.”

The “imperial red” weighs in at 6.8% ABV, with an IBU of 95, making it one of the company’s strongest and most bitter beers.

“It features masses of resinous hops over a chewy malt base,” said Rob. “The aim was to produce something bold yet balanced – it should smooth out nicely with a bit of age.”

Operation Red Thunder is currently available around Newcastle’s pubs in a cask-conditioned form, with limited bottle and keg versions to follow soon.

“I’m rather pleased with it and I’m especially keen to try the kegged version,” Rob added.
