Cumberland Arms celebrates 135th anniversary of Byker Bridge

The Cumberland Arms in Ouseburn, NewcastleTHE CUMBERLAND Arms in Newcastle’s Ouseburn is to celebrate the 135th anniversary of the opening  of the city’s Byker Bridge.

Opened to pedestrians on October 19 1878 – and to carts and carriages on January 27 1879 – the iconic bridge was originally only 30ft wide, and cost a half penny to cross.

And on Saturday the pub, which sits just below the bridge’s eastern end, will be re-creating parts of the opening ceremony with help from The Bearpark and Esh Colliery Band , Rapper dancers, a Punch and Judy Show and lots of traditional Victorian games for all the family.

There is also a beer and cider festival with 30 cask beers, 20 ciders and 10 keg beers which starts today and runs until Sunday (see the beer list below)

The brass band will be playing from around 12pm on  Saturday, while from 4pm, there will be a singing session in the back bar led by George Unthank, with Becky and Rachel Unthank, and Niopha Keegan so drinkers can sing their hearts out.

Then on Sunday the pub will play host to the Autumn Graze event, which brings together local food producers and food lovers from 12pm.
